screenwriting for dummies

Hi, complete novice here..however, I am trying to write a screenplay that is biographical. My question is this, my research comes from some biographies among other sources. It is not my intent to write a screenplay from a biography, and my vision includes a lot of storytelling cinematographically. And yes, there has been a movie done long ago on this historical, amazing person, which I purposfully will not watch so as not to sway any creativeness. Does anyone have any advice good for me? I appreciate it!

    Yeah: watch the movie.

You need to know what other people have done with the same material. If you end up doing something similar, ignorance is not an excuse.

You need to watch lots of similar movies, in fact. It'll help you understand what works and what doesn't.

Look, if you have a strong, original vision for the project, that will come through and you won't be unduly influenced by the other film.

If you don't, not watching the film isn't going to make your work non-derivative.

My advice is that if you're a complete novice then don't write a biopic! It's one of the hardest formats, and I have the greatest respect for writers who can pull it off. If you're new to screenwriting, then standard genres are all easier to tackle.

The problem with biopics is that with most famous people there's simply too much material out there, and cutting it down in a way that is both dramatically satisfying and true to the person in question without including every single detail and making a four-hour-long movie is really, really difficult (unless a long movie like "Gandhi" or "Lawrence of Arabia" is your goal). And the research involved can be very daunting.

But, if you insist, I would watch every highly-rated biopic you can out there too see how they deal with these issues. Smarter people than you or I have figured out great ways to work this stuff out.

    Two standard tricks are:

    * Make the story about a defining moment in their life.
    * For a fuller life story, skip around a lot and only hit the high notes.

And then there's a movie like "32 Short Films About Glen Gould," one of the most satisfyingly unconventional biopics made. It sort of follows the second model, but doesn't bother to establish continuity between the events.

    Good luck.

      watch 'ed wood'.

it captures the spirit of the person without getting stuck on historical accuracy...the obvious events are obvious, it focuses more on his relationships with others to give weight to the character.

The key, I think, is to find one story you want to tell in the character's life, rather than try to capture everything.

eg, "Elizabeth" focused solely on the story of Queen Elizabeth taking control of her country and government during the beginning of her reign. Her life, was, of course, much longer and more complicated than that, but they focused on ONE story.

That's a good rule of thumb, in my mind.

maybe not one story, per se, but yeah.

restraint, restraint, restraint. less is more...

Rule number one for screenwriting for dummies should be..make sure no one else is doing it!! I can't believe it, I just discoved Martha Fiennes has beat me to it. Dita Von Teese will be the star in her upcoming biopic of Mata Hari. I hope it measures up to my vision..And thanks everyone, you already have taught me alot.

Looking forward to a dramatic, sexy, ultimately tragic story....and at least Dita Von Teese is beautiful!!

Here's the Mata Hari page on IMDB:

              www.imdb.com/character/ch0027577/

Garbo played one of the early great versions of her.

And re: "Elizabeth" -- I hated that film and its sequel. Both are incredibly shallow, unsatisfying versions of the life of one of the greatest women who ever lived (and director Shekhar Kapur has this annoying habit of constantly shooting overhead wide shots from the ceiling thinking that it's some brilliant stylistic choice when it's just sophomorically repetitious).

Instead watch "Elizabeth R," the 1971 six-ep BBC miniseries with Glenda Jackson in the title role. Now THAT'S great biopic writing.

I actually really liked Kapur's first "Elizabeth" movie. But hey, different strokes for different folks.

The second one was a load of horsecrap, though.

I think there's a rule: only 1 Mata Hari flick per year. Why not rock an Aphra Behn biopic instead. She's more interesting.
                  • This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.

I can't think of any recent biopics I liked better than Frida...oh, I liked Lords of Dogtown a lot but I don't think that's considered a biopic, even though Stacy Peralta (one of those depicted) wrote the screenplay.
